The mission of Passageway, Inc. First Responder Support and Trauma Recovery is inspired by Kathleen Miller's vision and vast experience in all sectors of civil society.
My career in mental health counseling and experiences in civil society have impassioned me to pursue Passageway's mission with Integrity, Commitment, Compassion, and Enthusiasm to facilitate healing, connect people, families and communities and create a mentally healthier supportive society.
Utilizing an eclectic approach to mental health counseling and psychotherapy within a variety of service models, Kathleen's twenty plus years of experience provides healing for a diverse population spanning all age groups and a full spectrum of life concerns.
Kathleen's broad experience with individuals, families, couples and children as a systems/family therapist allows her to assist in a variety of environments including school, home, workplace and inpatient facilities.
The treatment of traumatic stress as well as coping with grief and loss through an eclectic approach to psychotherapy is one of Kathleen's areas of expertise.
Traumatic stress comes in many forms and affects most of us. Although trauma is typically thought of in terms of military or physical, psychological and sexual abuse, traumatic stress underlies many physical, behavioral and psychological concerns.
Throughout the years, Kathleen has accumulated extensive experience working with first responders, military personnel, veterans, healthcare professionals, mental health counselors, and other protective service providers. While these individuals consistently and vigorously serve the needs of others, they sometimes require assistance themselves as they strive to overcome burnout, compassion fatigue, critical incident stress and vicarious traumatic stress.
Kathleen is licensed in clinical supervision and is a certified approved consultant, facilitator and teacher in EMDR therapy working with students, interns and licensed mental health clinicians in treatment of traumatic stress, EMDR therapy, mental health therapy, and behavioral health and addictions. She also provides consultation to organizations in developing the most effective and healthiest teams and leaders.
Kathleen’s experience in different sectors of civil society, mental health counseling, treatment of traumatic stress and first responder support will provide you and/or your organization with knowledgeable guidance and support.

Kathleen Miller's experience in public and private sectors of civil society includes:
Medical and Health Care Sector
Kathleen’s education in the medical field and experience in health care systems provides clients with support, greater understanding and the ability to advocate for their physical and healthcare needs. Kathleen's training and experience include palliative care and hospice care as a volunteer and panel member. She is licensed in clinical supervision with students, interns and licensed clinicians in the areas of mental health, EMDR and addictions. Education – Social Services- Judicial Sectors
Kathleen’s experience as a Pupil Services/Special Education Director, K-12 School Counselor, School Board Member and teacher/educator provides the knowledge base to assist and support educators, students and their families within the educational system in many matters like the navigating the internal and external systems and relationships, development of individualized education plans and bully prevention. She implemented an anti-bullying program in schools in several counties and participated in the original movement to de-institutionalize the cognitively, physically and mentally disabled towards reintegration into society. Her experience also includes working in wrap-around programs; advocating and coordinating with schools, juvenile justice, social services, families and clients, thereby having the ability to assist families and their children in navigating these systems successfully.
Public Safety Sector
Kathleen's passion in supporting veterans and first responders grew from many years of treating them and their families and discovering their need for support often went unmet due to a self expectation of strength and the expectations of invulnerability in their work environment. Throughout her career, Kathleen has participated on critical stress incident management teams providing psychological first aide to those who respond when others are in need thereby exposing themselves to traumatic stress. Kathleen's education and training with and for veterans and first responders has strengthened her ability to strengthen them. Kathleen trained and worked with the Red Cross as a Mental Health Disaster worker and Lifesaving, CPR and First Aide instructor. She provided consultation in the development of citywide disaster plans and mental health following September 11th. Kathleen’s experience as a criminal justice advocate and expert witness developed an understanding of the juridic consequences of mental health.
Government Public Sector
Kathleen has worked as a public servant in government. Kathleen was appointed by the governor and serves as Vice Chair on the Marriage and Family Therapy, Professional Counseling, and Social Work Examining Board, the entity that oversees the laws, regulations and licensure of these professions through the Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services. Kathleen was also an elected official serving on a local school board.
Business Private Sector
Kathleen entered the mental health field after working in business management, finance, marketing, and sales. She has provided training, management, and human resources consultation in all sectors of civil society. Kathleen also has expertise in career counseling and in performance enhancement in the workplace. She has developed career planning and web-based trainings to assist people in finding their niche.
Kathleen’s long-term experience and education in counseling/psychotherapy and consultation within various sectors of civil society provides an understanding of the relationship between individuals and systems, a great resource and support for making informed life choices, and making the changes you desire regarding your relationships, mental health and well being.
